He didn’t want to let Mila out of his arms. Her warmth and softness calmed him in the middle of this chaos. He felt protective of her, as if he should somehow shield her from everything evil in the world. Everything evil outside of the Highland House door. She was carrying his cub. It was hard to let her walk away even if it was only down the hall to join the other women. He turned to face his brothers, slamming his palms on the counter.

“We are coming up with a damn strategy. Now.” He glared at each of them. “We don’t know how much longer we have until the wolves follow through on their threats.”

“You’re right,” Hudson stated. “We have to stop fighting each other and focus on fighting the wolves.”

Striker layered the letters he and Presley had received across the kitchen island. “Let’s look at these again. There has to be something here we can use as leverage. We need to get the upper hand.”

At least the yelling had stopped. The brothers put their head together, swapping the death threats and putting them in the order Presley found them.

Crawford held one between his fingers. “I think I see the pattern.”

“What’s that?” Striker asked.

“The wolves are greedy.”

“What’s new there?” Hudson scoffed. “They’ve always wanted our land.”

Crawford nodded. “But maybe it’s because they’ve never had any, or at least what they’ve had keeps getting taken from them. Acre by acre they’ve lost their ancestry. So much so that they joined two small packs.”

“What are you saying?” Striker abandoned the stack of notes and stared at his brother.

“What if we give them something?”

Hudson pounded his fist on the counter. “I’m not handing over a fucking grain of soil off this land to those mongrels. They tried to kill Riley.” He turned to face Striker. “And Presley.”

“Calm the fuck down.” Crawford eyed him. “I think we have a chance to do something good here.”

His brothers stared at him as if he had sprouted a set of wolf fangs. No one was going to like this plan. But he didn’t like the idea of a full-on wolf to bear battle either. The truth was shifters would die. And more than likely the Highlands would walk away covered in the blood of their enemies.

There had to be a way through this that wouldn’t end in death. It was in their nature to protect, but Crawford believed it was also part of their duty to spare lives if there was a way to move forward. Mila had shown him another side of life. The side that brought out his humanity.

“Well, let’s hear it. What’s your idea?” Hudson huffed. He was always the impatient one. How in the hell did Riley put up with his mood shifts?

Before Crawford could get the words out of his mouth the front door opened and they heard the commotion from the next set of Highlands arriving.
